Peugeot 207
Peugeot have long done a roaring trade in the small car sector, but soon business should be even brisker than usual.
For in a few weeks' time the French marque will unleash one of their most sought-after models in ages: the Peugeot 207.
As the newest member of the legendary 2 series, the Peugeot 207 succeeds - but doesn't replace - the record-breaking 206.
The story of the 2 series started with the launch of the 201 way back in 1929, but it really gained momentum when the 205 appeared on the scene in the Eighties.
Both the 205 and the 206 went on to top the five million mark, and to date 2-series models have clocked up more than 13.2million sales across the globe.
Peugeot have invested heavily in the creation of the Peugeot 207 but if, as expected, it turns out to be another multi-million seller, it will be money well spent.
Marginally bigger, wider and taller than its predecessor, the new compact hatch certainly looks the business.
In terms of exterior styling, the Peugeot 207 is in many respects a grown-up version of the 206.
The most radical change is that it now features a face very similar to those seen on the 307 and 407.
It involves a low-slung grille, sharply-raked bonnet and sleek piercing headlights that almost resemble cat's eyes.
At the side, the waistline rises steeply towards the rear to give the hatch a sporty look, while the rear design takes in a series of curves that blend beautifully to give the car a sense of strength.
Inside the cabin, the extra dimensions have been put to good use. There is bags of leg and elbow space both front and rear, which means this supermini can easily take five adults.
The use of top-drawer trim and finishes means the interior exudes a real feel-good factor - something that can be further enhanced when you use the discreet fragrance diffuser.
Seven different fragrances will be available, all of which have been specially developed by a leading perfume supplier.
Is this a French car or what? On a more blokeish note, I can report that the dashboard is typically Peugeot with its highly-functional design. The instrument panel features three individual circular dials with non-reflecting glass covers.
And at the centre of the facia, a recessed multi-function display is the focus of attention.
Meanwhile, the shape and adjustability of the driver's seat ensures that it's easy to get a comfortable driving position.
The Peugeot 207 will be offered in five trim levels, starting with the Urban and culminating in the impressive GT version.
From the outset the spec list is generous and includes a decent CD sound system, an adjustable steering wheel, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and split-folding rear seats.
To savour the excellent driving dynamics of the Peugeot 207, there will be a choice of six engines at launch, all of which are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
For now the petrol options consist of a 1.4-litre eight-valve, a 1.4-litre 16-valve and a 1.6-litre with 110bhp on tap.
Diesel fans can pick between the 1.4 HDi and two 1.6 oil burners - one putting out 90bhp and the other 110bhp.
For sheer driving enjoyment and performance, the most powerful diesel tops the bill.
The Peugeot 207 seems set to take the supermini segment by storm, butthe evergreen 206 hasn't reached the end of the road.
Its global career will continue for many years, with Peugeot foreseeing a bright future for the model in China and Malaysia. And for the time being it will still be sold alongside the new Peugeot 207 in Britain and across Europe.
While this move should keep diehard 206 fans happy, Peugeot hope that the Peugeot 207 will attract a new generation of car buyers to the brand.
To this end the Peugeot 207 range will see many additions in the coming years, including high-tech engines and new body styles.
